National Peer Tutor Scholarship
There is an increasing trend in income inequality in the United States, and children have become the largest population living in poverty. Students from low-income families are faced with great inequities and an ever growing opportunity gap. While there are many factors that play into a student’s lifelong success including family and community support, schooling plays a powerful role in a student’s life.
Through our extensive research, we have identified peer tutoring as a powerful tool in increasing academic performance and closing the growing achievement gap in education. The 2015 & 2016 National Peer Tutor Scholarship Programs served to recognize and reward the work of outstanding middle and high school peer tutors. The scholarship was also an investment in future leaders who will use their college educations to further contribute to our mission and positively impact education.
Our 2015 National Peer Tutor of the Year Finalist writes about his peer tutoring experience: “I'm extremely proud of the strides he made that summer, but I am most proud of the friendship we formed, the trust that I earned, and the seed I planted about college...His school has inspired me to use politics to find policy changes that will give all students the opportunity to escape poverty.”
We truly believe peer tutoring will play a powerful role in helping educators eliminate the inequities that hold students back from achieving their full potential and the American Dream.
